What a Successful School Fundraiser Looks Like (And How One School Raised $62,000)

When schools think about running a successful fundraiser, the goal is simple: raise more money with less stress for families and staff.
At Poe Classical Elementary on Chicago’s South Side, that goal became a reality.
By using a simple virtual fundraising approach, the school raised over $62,000 to support enrichment learning opportunities for their students.

What makes a school fundraiser successful?
A successful school fundraiser raises meaningful funds with less work and an easy process. The most effective fundraisers tend to perform well in these four areas:
Profitability: How much money the school actually keeps after any costs
Ease of execution: How simple it is for staff and families to run
Participation: How many students and families can easily get involved
Reach: The ability to go beyond the local community to maximize support
Poe Elementary’s approach worked because it did well across all four. By removing common barriers like handling products, collecting cash, and coordinating in-person events. All while making it easier for more students and families to participate while increasing total funds raised.
Why Poe Elementary moved beyond traditional fundraisers
Before switching to a Double Good fundraiser, Poe Elementary tried a wide range of traditional school fundraisers like walkathons and formal balls.
While these events brought the community together, they often required significant time and energy for a relatively limited return.
These [traditional] events cost so much in time and energy for the payout you get -Poe Principal, Eric Dockery
Looking for a better approach, the school was exploring new options when a counselor suggested trying Double Good’s fundraising platform. Ultimately it changed how they approached fundraising.
How Poe Elementary ran a successful school fundraiser
Compared to traditional fundraising methods, Poe Elementary’s fully online fundraiser delivered stronger results with less effort.
Here’s what made it both simple and effective:
Easy for students and families to get set up
Each student created a personal Pop-Up Store online in just a few minutes. There were no order forms to manage and no cash to collect, making it easier for more families to participate.
A wider network of supporters
Instead of selling only to people nearby, students could share their store links through text and social media. That expanded their reach to friends and family across the country, increasing the number of supporters.
Direct fulfillment for all orders
All orders were shipped directly to supporters, so staff and volunteers weren't needed to sort or deliver products. This eliminated one of the most time-consuming parts of traditional fundraising.
Real-time competition and tracking
A live leaderboard showed how much each student had raised and how they ranked across the school, adding a layer of excitement that fueled friendly competition and progress throughout the fundraiser.
“Everyone watches the leaderboard. I’m on it all the time posting and encouraging, poking and challenging.” says Prinicipal Dockery.
Incentives that motivated participation
To keep energy high, the school paired the fundraiser with student incentives and prizes.
We give prizes for the top ten selling students and for the top classroom. And we have schoolwide goals—if we sell a certain amount, we’ll have a big party at the end of the year. So we have a lot of incentives built in. —Principal Dockery
These small moments of recognition helped drive participation and kept students motivated from start to finish.
All together, these elements, which are built into Double Good’s online fundraising platform, allowed Poe Elementary to run a repeatable fundraiser with less complexity and better results than the traditional fundraisers they’d tried before.
The Results: Growing year-over-year school fundraising success
What started as a new experiment quickly turned into a fundraising strategy that Poe Elementary could build on over time.
When they first launched their fundraiser, the expectations were low, but it quickly gained momentum. On the very first day of their fundraiser, the school generated $10,000 in sales, which set the tone for what was possible and motivated students.
From there, participation grew, and each year built on the last:
2022: $36,000+ raised
2023: $43,000+ raised
2024: $54,000+ raised
2025: $62,000+ raised
Each year Poe Elementary continues to raise more, proving that a successful school fundraiser isn’t just about a single event, but about choosing a model that can grow over time.
Turning school fundraising into real impact
Poe Elementary discovered a better way to support students, without the time and complexity of traditional fundraisers. The impact of the funds raised went far beyond the totals.
For years, the school had hoped to invest in virtual reality (VR) technology but couldn’t make it work within their budget. With the funds they raised, they were finally able to bring VR into the classroom, giving students the ability to experience lessons in a more immersive way.
Instead of just learning about places like the pyramids, students can now explore them virtually, bringing lessons to life in a way that wasn’t possible before.
The school also introduced a student game room with air hockey, ping pong, and video game consoles. This quickly became a meaningful part of the school culture, giving students new ways to celebrate achievements and stay motivated.
More than anything, the successful fundraiser shifted what felt possible for the school and turned ideas that once felt out of reach into reality.
As Principal Eric Dockery puts it:
We’re trying to provide the best educational experience possible. We need partners in order to do it, and I really value the partnership we have with Double Good. It has allowed me and the Poe School community to dream bigger.
