How a successful fundraiser helped more kids play travel soccer in Northern Virginia

With youth travel soccer costs putting participation out of reach for some families, Northern Virginia Soccer Club (NVSC) wasn't sure how to make the season happen for all its players. They needed to cover expenses like tournament fees and training, and they were hesitant to try another fundraiser because their previous one had cost them around $2,500.

Instead of doing another complicated, costly fundraiser, NVSC opted for a Double Good virtual fundraiser because there were no upfront costs and it was simple to launch. They raised $15,280 in just 4 days while bringing teams and families together for a fun and focused push.

Here's how their soccer fundraising success story came together.

  • Organization type: Youth soccer club

  • Total raised: $15,280

  • Fundraiser length: 4 days

  • Sellers: 77

  • History: First Double Good fundraiser

  • Impact: Funds helped make travel soccer accessible to more young athletes

What the $15,280 raised made possible

For Hans Etienne, the club's technical director of coaching, it comes down to who gets to play:

"The organization was able to provide financial assistance to kids who otherwise would not have been able to afford to play. This gives more kids the opportunity to participate in travel soccer, pursue college opportunities, and potentially achieve their professional dreams one day."

The funds also helped keep the whole program running, from getting teams to tournaments and investing in their development on the field to making sure every coach was licensed.

The fundraiser made such a difference to the club and its athletes that they now plan to run two Double Good fundraisers each year.

From game plan to a final-minute finish

Planning a successful fundraiser with Expert Fundraising Support

Before launch, the club used Double Good's Expert Fundraising Support, which gives organizers free one-on-one coaching. The club leaders used what they learned to set goals, plan communications, and develop incentives that would motivate their teams.

The leaderboard fueled competition

The club used Double Good's team leaderboard to turn the fundraiser into a friendly competition between teams. Real-time totals let everyone see where they stood, and teams were recognized together rather than only as individual sellers. The competition came down to the final minutes, with the U9 girls team winning by just $19.

They kept the energy up on social

A dedicated social media lead posted leaderboard updates and shout-outs that kept the excitement going. Countdown posts like "Only three hours left!" encouraged teams to keep sharing their individual Pop-Up Store® links through the final hours.

Incentives made it worthwhile to participate

The club rewarded winning teams with prizes and money they could put toward tournament expenses, so the competition went straight back into the athletes' on-field experience. It's a good example of how fundraising incentives work best when they tie back to what your team is raising money for.

A winning approach to soccer fundraising

Northern Virginia Soccer Club's story shows that a successful travel soccer fundraiser doesn't have to be costly or complicated. With no upfront costs and 50% of every sale going back to the club, a 4-day Double Good fundraiser turned into financial assistance that helps more kids pursue the sport they love.
